Kidney stones are hard deposits made of minerals and salts that form inside your kidneys. While small stones may pass unnoticed, larger stones can lodge in your ureter, blocking the flow of urine and causing swelling and spasms.
Early Warning Signs
Unlike severe renal colic which causes agonizing side pain, early warning signals can be deceptively mild:
- Intermittent dull ache in the lower back or flank
- Microscopic blood in the urine, sometimes causing a faint pinkish tinge
- Persistent urge to urinate or discomfort during urination
- Cloudy or unusually pungent urine
Prevention Strategies
Drinking adequate clean water (2.5 to 3 liters daily) is the single most effective deterrent. Limiting excessive sodium, moderating animal protein, and maintaining healthy calcium consumption prevent mineral crystallization.
